What is affirmative therapy?
Affirmative therapy is more than just a therapeutic approach; it recognizes the importance of validating and embracing individual identities. By acknowledging and honoring diverse backgrounds, religions, abilities, genders, and sexual orientations, Affirmative Therapy fosters a sense of belonging and acceptance that is crucial for personal growth and well-being. It empowers individuals to overcome societal barriers, break free from internalized prejudices, and develop a stronger, more authentic sense of self. Affirmative therapy challenges norms, promotes self-acceptance, and cultivates resilience, ultimately leading to greater emotional well-being, fulfillment, and happiness. In a time when inclusivity is at the forefront, Affirmative Therapy stands as a beacon of hope, empowering individuals to thrive as their true and authentic selves.
Other than providing affimrmative care how do you stay educated and aware of the needs of diverse communities?
Great question! In order to continue to grow and evolve as an affirmative clinican, I continue to seek further education around inclusion and affirmative care. Every year I pursue continuing education oppurtunities that promote education around affirmative care and inclsusion. Additionally, I regulary assess my own biases and assumptions when working with clients. This work is done both through reflection and clinical work with my supervisor and colleagues.
In addition to this, I work to access newly published research pertaining to communities of diverse backgrounds. This helps me to read, assess, and impliment best evidence based practices into my work with clients. My goal is to continously make this research more accessible to you as well through monthly blog posts so you can check there to get a better understanding of what this looks like.
