5 Unexpected Ways to Cope with the Back-to-School Transition for College Students

This week I’m talking to you, college student. Now that were a couple of weeks into school, the newness has worn off and roller coaster of the semester seems to be in full swing. The back-to-school transition can be a mixed bag of emotions. Whether you're just starting your journey in higher education or returning for another semester, it's totally normal to feel a bit overwhelmed. So let's dive into some unexpected but effective ways to make this transition smoother.

1.      Create a "Transition Playlist"

Music is magic, my friend. Put together a playlist of songs that make you feel good and motivated. Listen to it while you're getting ready in the morning or during your commute to class. The power of music can help set a positive tone for your day and get you in the right mindset to tackle your classes.

Or maybe you’re like me and prefer to not think about what goes on the playlist. Remember, Spotify will create these for you so let it. Let it create a custom playlist for just you or for you and your bff. If not, might I suggest looking into my personal favorite playlists as of late: Songs That Sound Like Carhartt Overalls, Arts and Crafts 2023, The Sound of Lubbock, and Pop Punks Not Dead.

2.      Embrace the Power of Routine

Okay, okay, you've probably heard about the importance of routines, but here's the twist: create a daily "anchor" routine. This means having a consistent time each day to do something you love, whether it's reading a book from the Mahon library (PSA library cards are free), taking a walk around Tech Terrace, or having a cozy cup of tea at J&B Coffee or at home from Fox and Faeling. This anchor can be a comforting constant amidst the chaos of college life.

Listen, for the love everything, please stop trying to cram more “health” into your day. Plan. Something. You. Enjoy. Lately, I’ve been waking up a whole hour earlier just to read because I simply enjoy it. It’s pretty much the most staple part of my “morning routine”. I love reading and I love waking up before the rest of the world. But choose whatever you want!

3.      The Power of Saying "No"

College can sometimes feel like a never-ending buffet of opportunities and commitments. Don't be afraid to politely decline some. It's okay to say "no" to that club or extra project if it's going to stretch you too thin. Remember, quality over quantity in your college experience can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling journey.

4.      Technology Detox Hour

Okay okay okay. I know this is a bit of a buzz phrase right now and I won’t bore you with my feelings on this. BUT hear me out: turn off your phone, close your laptop, and disconnect from the digital world. Social media is often another form of being “social”. We spend time looking at people we either do or do not know and because we see pockets of their life I think our brains might actually confuse this with being social but what it doesn’t do is grow connections. Use this time for a mindful walk around campus or Dunbar Lake, a chat with a friend at the Range or playing games at Mano Negra, or simply to enjoy your surroundings. Try to use this time to re-connect with your life. This break can do wonders for your mental clarity and overall well-being.

5.      Rediscover Your Inner Child

College life can be serious business, but don't forget to have fun. Channel your inner child by revisiting activities you used to love. Whether it's coloring, playing an instrument, or building with LEGO, these nostalgic pastimes can help you unwind and recharge your creative spirit.

Don’t think too hard about this one. The more simple the child like pleasure, the better. Grab a coloring book, a paint by numbers, spend 200 minutes walking around Mad Hatters deciding between Monopoly or Scrabble, or learning a new dance routine.

In conclusion, the back-to-school transition doesn't have to be a stress-fueled ordeal. By trying out these unexpected approaches, you can make the journey more enjoyable and manageable. Remember, it's okay to seek help from professionals if you ever feel overwhelmed. Your mental well-being is a top priority, and you've got a team of supporters rooting for your success.
